Understanding photography has, and I hope always will be, a slow and steady progression for me. I didn’t start out knowing it all and I certainly don’t “know it all” now. I still think of myself as a beginner in many ways and have always struggled with having confidence in my abilities. On the other hand, when a friend asks a question about their DSLR or someone messages me looking for help, I have always loved being able to answer. I know how confusing it was for me in the beginning, so to be able to shed a little light to those who are also struggling is extremely rewarding for me. I take delight in being able to help people understand their cameras and become more comfortable with lighting, shooting, and editing their photos.
When I was asked to mentor/give photography lessons I always used to laugh it off and direct people to other places. I was still learning, how could I teach others? And then I realized, that wasn’t the point. Hopefully I will ALWAYS be learning. I am by no means an expert, but I might just be able to help someone else with the knowledge I have gained, no matter how little that is. So with that being said I have started to offer mentoring to beginning photographers or to the person who just wants to learn how to shoot in manual to get good photos of their kids and family.
Below is a photo of my first student-Gretchen. She is young and smart and beautiful and has learned how to take some killer photos! It has been a blast to sit alongside her as her eyes have been opened to the beauty of shooting in manual with confidence and creating photos she loves! I look forward to every session we have had and am sad when it is over. It has been so fun for me to pass along information that took me months and months to learn through YouTube tutorials and online classes.
